Dangerous dogs

All information for general knowledge only
Please see a lawyer if you wish to act on them

In 1991, in consequences of many attacks by dangerous dogs, rules were introduced to categorise and control certain dogs.

Category A dogs include

Pit bull (American pit bull terrier, American
Staffordshire terrier, American bulldog, bull terrier)
Akita
Neapolitan mastiff
Tosa

These dogs cannot be brought into Singapore. Dogs already in Singapore must be sterilised. The owner must post a bond of $5,000 and this sum will forfeited if such dogs are not muzzled or leashed outside their home. The owner must take up a third-party insurance policy for at least $100,000 per dog to cover any injury/damage the dog may cause to people, animal or property.

Category B dogs include

Bull mastiff
Bull terrier
Doberman pincher
German shepherd dog
Rottweiler
Canary island cattle dog.

Such dogs must be leashed and muzzled in public places.

A person who wants to bring in such animals must obtain an import permit from the Agri-food and Veterinary Authority of singapore (AVA). A pedigree report on the dog must be obtained from a vet in the exporting country. On arrival in Singaprore, an ACA vet will verify the breed. Puppies must be at least 12 weeks old.
