Tan Poh Teng was born on 27 July 1886 in Fujian, China. He died in Malaysia on 14 September 1954; he was 68 years old.

Tan Poh Teng came to Singapore when he was sixteen years old. He worked in a vegetable farm at Tanjong Rhu before joining a railway construction team as a clerk/cook. When the railway reached Segamat (100 miles north of Singapore), he decided to stay because the town folks were predominantly from Fujian.

He became a rubber trader and prospered. He has eight sons and six daughters.

As on 1 January 2000, one hundred and fourteen years after he was born, his descendants totalled 200 persons, comprising

14 children

68 grandchildren,

120 great grand children and

eight great great grand children.

The full family (including members joining through marriage) totalled 251.
