30 things I want to tell my children

1 of 30 Religion
A variety of religious worlds exist today. The majority of them say there is only one way to God, their way. Mathematically therefore, when you make a choice, the odds are stacked against you finding the right door (on the laws of probability).

2 of 30 Genes
You will not be here if you have an ancestor who

forgets to have children
prefers his own sex
succumbs to diseases
crashes his car into a tree

Nature sieves out such people. They are less likely to have any descendants. Imagine from the beginning of Life (a million years ago), every one of your ancestors has succeeded in passing the baton of Life down to the next generation. Will you fail them?

It is important to understand the instinct of The Genes.
For example, a child with loving grandparents has better chances of survival. Extrapolate into the future, such grandchild with similar disposition towards grandchildren will enhance the survival of his descendants. Conclusion, genes that love grandchildren survive.
Bottom line: Grandparents love grandchildren.

It explains why brothers love each other when they are young and fight each other when they are old to claim assets for their children and grandchildren. Nature encourages such behavior, blame it on the genes.

Imagine a situation
Judge A has only one son who is charged with murder. Judge A is honest; he finds him guilty and sentences him to death.Judge B is faced with the same dilemma. He asks another judge to hear the case and then does everything he can (lawfully or unlawfully) to help. The son is acquitted.

Judge A is praised by the King and is promoted. Judge B is found out; demoted and punished but his son survives to produce offspring.

Analysis
Judge A is successful during his lifetime but his genes die with him. Judge B is a failure in life but he succeeds in pushing his genes into the future. So now, can you guess what kind of human beings are walking around with you today? Of course, people who are like Judge B. Such behavior is called “human nature”.

4 of 30 Power shifts
Imagine a situation
It is one o’clock at night. You are lying in bed with your partner. You have just finished doing what young people usually do at 1 am – watching TV. You feel like having a glass of milk. Do you (a) get out of bed, get yourself a glass of milk, or (b) ask your partner to get the milk for you?

If you are the (b) type – ask yourself “Why am I asking my partner instead of getting the milk myself?”

Chances are that you are asking your partner to fetch milk because you perceive you are the “stronger” party in the relationship. Early in a marriage, the young wife is stronger, the husband wants sex. She will usually ask the husband to fetch things.  As the years go by, the balance may shift and the husband ends up bossing the wife around. The situation is unhealthy.

Remember: Power shifts in a marriage. Like a sine curve (for those who know their maths), power shifts up and down. Today, you may be strong but you may be weak tomorrow (eg down by a stroke, get sack in your job, crash into a tree).

Once you realise this, what do you do when you are strong? When you are strong, you should treat your weaker partner reasonably, so that when you are weak, your partner will treat you fairly too.
Do not bully others and do not allow others to bully you.

5 of 30 Integrity
When choosing a wife, friend or business partner, look for a person who has integrity, is hardworking and intelligent. Remember, integrity is most important; a hardworking and intelligent person with no integrity can harm you. I make no mention of beauty and wealth; beauty may fade at 35 and wealth is transient.

How do you spot integrity ? Not easy. One way is to see how he behaves towards his parents, his siblings, his friends, his subordinates.

6 of 30 Know your electricity
Know that V equal RI (V is voltage, R is resistance, I is current). Know that Watt divided by Voltage gives you Current and how it adds up to 12 amperes (a household plug can only take 12 amperes). Know where the brown and green wires go in a plug.

7 of 30 Know your physics
Know what is latent heat of vaporisation and how it works for the aircon and the fridge. Know how the electric motor works, what goes on in a piston engine and why clothes dry in a centrifugal dryer.

8 of 30 Know your geography
Be aware of the seasons, the solstice and equinox, the 21st days of March, June, September and December.

9 of 30 Know your mother tongue
All signboards leading to heaven are written in Chinese (and in the mother tongue of each traveller). Learn your Chinese (or mother tongue) well.

10 of 30 Know your knots
Know how to tie the reef knot, clove hitch, round turn two half hitches, sheet bend
