Before you meet your wife, your mother probably is the most important person in your life, followed by, perhaps, your sister. In other words, your mother has clocked up the most Goodwill, followed by your sister.
When you marry, your wife starts to clock up her Goodwill (the clock might have started when you dated her). Because of the intense interaction with the wife (hopefully), her clock may run faster than other members of your family.
Logic therefore dictates, that it must be some years before her Goodwill equals and then surpasses mum's. It requires a truly outstanding wife and a mediocre mum to upset this Goodwill Tally.
After about ten years of marriage, you may contemplate throwing the life buoy to your wife.
Your wife may not agree with you now, but when your son is 20 years old, she may like this method of tallying Goodwill.
